From Hugh Masakela to Sonny Rollins’ St. Thomas, jazz has always explored the cultural unity and shared experiences of the African Diaspora. With the use of originals and jazz standards the Charmaine Michelle Quintet will explore the different ways Pan Africanism is expressed through jazz music.
Charmaine Michelle raised in Northern Virginia, as a teen spent time as missionary on the island of St. Maarten and spent a semester at an HBCU. As an adult was married to a West African man for 10 years, graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in African History and for a short time lived on the island of Dominica. Today as an artist she seeks to explore the lessons of her Pan African experience, with the use of jazz and other genres.
